Weaving Fun & Colors
Halodhiya Sorai is a revolutionary idea that aspires to revitalize Assam's rich and diverse cultural heritage. The shop is dedicated to displaying natural fabrics, textiles, and patterns that are strongly based on Assamese culture. The primary focus of Halodhiya Sorai is to reintroduce these handloom weaves to the entire world and make them accessible to people in easy, wearable forms.
We emphasize the importance of sustainable handloom weaves. We firmly believe that sustainable fashion is the need of the hour and that traditional handloom textiles are the perfect embodiment of this philosophy. The weaves used by Halodhiya Sorai are not only sustainable but are also of the highest quality, ensuring that the products are long-lasting and durable.
The store has formed a partnership with the local weavers to bring their workmanship to the foreground. Every product in the store has a story of its own, and so does every person who has had a hand in making it, be it a weaver, a seller, or a buyer. Halodhiya Sorai wants to be a part of this journey by making a difference.

Our production unit is set up in Chaygaon, Assam which is run by the local weavers. Our specialties are cotton, eri, ghisa, tussar, pat, and muga fabric weaving. We have been engaged by a few government bodies to churn out locally-made gifts for ministry and official dignitaries. Our store has managed to retain the essence of Assamese tradition in its products, making them a unique and delightful blend of old and new.
About the founder:
For almost 10 years working as an HR, in a reputed MNC in Bengaluru and Delhi, Bhaswati Phukon, had made a name for herself. She often donned these beautiful garments to her workplace and corporate events, and her colleagues were always left in awe of their intricate designs and motifs.
Bhaswati’s colleagues were fascinated by her traditional Assamese attire and expressed their admiration for it. However, they were hesitant to wear it themselves due to the complexity of draping the Mekhela Chador. Bhaswati, being the enterprising individual she is, saw an opportunity to create something that could fuse the beauty of the Mekhela Chador with the ease and wearability of a saree. This was when the idea of Halodhiya Sorai was born.
Halodhiya Sorai was Bhaswati’s passion project, and she poured all her heart and soul into it. Bhaswati’s vision was to create sarees that incorporated the traditional look and fabric of the Mekhela Chador. She fused ‘Mekhela Chador’ with a saree making it a regular, wearable sari in workplaces.
Bhaswati Phukon’s journey from a successful HR professional to a visionary entrepreneur is truly inspiring. Her passion for her culture, heritage, and tradition led her to create Halodhiya Sorai, a brand that celebrates and showcases the beauty of Assamese craftsmanship. Bhaswati’s story is a testament to the fact that with hard work, dedication, and a vision, one can achieve anything they set their mind to.
History
History
Assam is known for its exquisite handloom textiles, which have a unique character and charm. The state has a rich history of weaving, and the weaves here are a reflection of the artistic and creative spirit of the people. However, with the advent of modern manufacturing techniques, the traditional handloom industry in Assam has suffered a severe blow.
This encourages to bring forth the idea of Halodhiya Sorai to life. The idea behind the brand was to give women the pleasure of wearing the beauty of Assamese handloom to their regular workplace, while also ensuring total comfort. Later on, it also started promoting Assam’s sustainable handloom work across the globe and also encouraged handloom products among the upcoming generations.
Working her 9 to 5 HR job in Bengaluru and Delhi, Bhaswati Phukon, realised her dream of marking herself as a pioneer in the traditional Assamese fashion industry. Her dream encouraged her to take the plunge and start her dream project - ‘Halodhiya Sorai - the Yellow Bird’ which aims at promoting the handloom industry while fusing distinctive features of the Assamese attire in regular work-wear sarees.
